I am looking for suggestions of freeware to be included in a computer for someone aged 65+. It’s running a P166 processor, 32M ram, W95 for a new user. I’m thinking along the lines of calendars, PIMs, word processor, maybe some card games – basically it needs to be easy to use, small, general interest software.

    I appreciate your help. Thanks.

cheers Just a thought. Have you checked some of the sites that routinely have freeware and/or inexpensive shareware available — tucows, tudogs, cnet and most of the PC magazines have download sites where you can get some freeware, testware (try for 30 days sort of thing) and inexpensive shareware.
Alternatively, maybe a search on an engine like Google might turn up something. HTH

Thanks for the reply. All those sources have lots of choices. I was hoping to narrow down the choices by getting some leads on specific software that users like you have tried and liked.

Ian, I have found the Windows version of Star Office to be a bit resource hungry and cumbersome to use. I threfore now recommend 602PC Suite. This is also free and compatible with Office 97/2000. Only has Word processor, spreadsheet, and graphic editor but that should be enough for most average folk.

The word processing program Yeah Write is good for a person who writes occasional letters or memos. It is easy to use (limited options) and has a nice large-print-on-the-screen display. (Specify installation to the C:ProgramsYW folder during installation or the program will install to the C:drive.) Free or $29 with more options. The free version is probably just fine. http://www.yeahwrite.com/
