So the other day I was upgrading a Windows 10 home to pro and found it interesting the ‘current’ way one has to upgrade to Windows 10 professional. In

So, did you ever get the Product key?
And did the Product Key work to upgrade to Win10/Pro?

      • #2506439

the Store key/Microsoft account worked.  But I don’t see a way through Microsoft proper to get an actual key.

So it sounds like they used what I understand to be a “universal key” to activate.

          Susan,

The “universal key” was only good to get 10 Pro upgrade installed. Once installed I then Activated it with the purchased key.

As of today, Windows 10 Pro is available from TigerDirect, Micro Center, CDW, B&H Photo (has upgrade), and Best Buy.

windows 10 pro upgrade – Best Buy  I see a 11 pro upgrade at Best buy, do they have 10?

As of today, Dec 11, Best Buy only sells Windows 10 Home.

Another site that sells a “legitimate” Windows 10 Pro Upgrade (i.e. the source is Microsoft) is Newegg.

Microsoft Windows 10 Pro Upgrade [from Home to Pro] [Digital Download]

Cost is $99 same as B&H Photo.

          • #2506589

Be careful when buying from NewEgg.

They have a number of third party vendors linked to their site.

We thought that we were ordering a Tripp Lite 2.5” SATA Hard Drive Mounting Kit from NewEgg.

It turned out that we were purchasing it from Foya, a Chinese company and the mount was shipped from Shenzhen City. It took weeks for it to be delivered.

And the product delivered was in a brown cardboard box, not Tripp Lite packaging and carried no Tripp Lite markings.  It appeared to be a knockoff.

Investing $125 for a Pro license instead of buying terabytes of external HDDs for image backups and using .reg keys to tame Windows home?

      • #2506593

I did the reg key.  It didn’t keep Windows 11 off the machine.  This is for a friend that I don’t have direct access to the computer.  He’s the one that has had camera issues, monitor issues and finally the machine got cratered while it was using Windows 11. Because I want to KEEP it on 10 I wanted to ensure I had full use of group policy to keep it on Windows 10.

I’ve tried the registry keys and 11 still gets offered up.  If you are not savvy, you end up with 11.

If the Reg keys are being used on Win Home, in the event the (almost) fullscreen “Win 11 is available for your computer” intrusion pops up, and the User is not computer savvy, they can click on the GW11 (as opposed to GWX) option instead of “Stay on Win10 for now.”
If that is the case, the Reg settings mean NOTHING and they get Win11.

If you are not the User, and it is someone you are taking care of, both you and the User will be surprised. There is no alternative in that case but a Rollback if you are lucky or a clean install if the upgrade borked the computer.

It happened to me (even on a Win10 Pro with GP TRV and Product set), with an older person with memory problems, whose computer I take care of. Fortunately, I was logged in remotely at the time and caught the “intrusion.”

That is why Susan is recommending InControl.

I was never offered Windows 11. Still running Windows 10 with GP TRV set now to 22H2.

Windows 7 Home editions were forced to 10, surely you didn’t think 10 to 11 would differ upon meeting the hardware requirements?
If MSFT want to upgrade THEIR WaaS Home edition Operating System on your hardware, they will from the ‘security’ angle, beta testing and growth statistics on one microsoft way graphs.

So no-one kept an eye on the dismal uptake of 11 since initial RTM Oct 5th 2021??
Evidently not, although microsoft has with the offerings of an upgrade/dumb-down to legs 11 (nowhere near Bingo!, more like a lottery…)
Statistics don’t lie, unless you’re Mark Twain.

Ergo why I wanted to upgrade him to Pro where they don’t shove as hard and I have the group policy setting that I know they respect.

You can sue Microsoft for $10,000 for installing Windows 11 against your will.

      Will you ?

Microsoft’s licensing has been a mess (and continually regressed) since Vista was introduced.  Coupling that fact with the UI functionality degradation, you run into problems like this.

Many times you can still access the same functionality via command line (slmgr.vbs, et. al. or via other API/file access), but it definitely isn’t user friendly for the average user.

Windows traditionally allowed the user to make their own decisions about what they want to do (similar to *nix, but with a more refined UI and product base), but in these later years it feels like they’re trying to follow the path of other  OS vendors — dictating their choices and removing freedom 🙁

If my Windows VMs (dev & testing) were to ever auto-update from Win10 to Win11, I’d be done with Windows for personal use.  The other updates and increasingly common untested releases are already enough to make one jump ship some days.

One suggestion I’ve seen was to disable TPM in bios to block 11, unless he’s using it.
