    Hey Y’all,

In my continued explorations of Win 11 I just found out that the Snipping Tool no longer exists! Wait you say, I can search for Snip and it pops right up. Well yes and no.

Seems like MS pulled a quickie on us and renamed Snip and Sketch, remember that being introduced in Win 10, to Snipping Tool.

I ran across this only because I use a Logitech G710+ keyboard with programmable G-Keys. I had one set to open the Snipping Tool and it failed when tried on Win 11. I flipped back to my Win 10 machine and the key still worked. Back to the Win 11 machine and it’s a no go. BTW I did an in-place upgrade so all the same stuff is present in Win 11 and just so you know I switch the Keyboard, Mouse, and Dual displays using a Tesmart KVM.

So what changed that the keystroke didn’t work on W11? Shouldn’t it have just pulled up the renamed program? Well, you’d think so…but NO because it isn’t named SnippingTool.exe any longer it’s now an APP (OH how I hate that word!).

Thanks to this article I found all this out and have now programmed the Win 11 Side to use the kbd shortcut Win+Shift+S and it works. I’m still not a happy camper since not my Win 10 and 11 Setups are out of sync. I haven’t decided if I want to reprogram the Win 10 side, I like the old interface better, or just leave it the way it is. BTW: the Win+Shift+S does work on the Win 10 side also bringing up Snip and Sketch.

Sometimes I think MS just likes to play with us. You know just change the name nobody will notice. WRONG!

May the Forces of good computing be with you!

That was announced at release of Windows 11:

Snipping Tool and Snip and Sketch have been merged into a single experience keeping the familiar Snipping Tool name.

      Feature deprecations and removals

It was already a Store app before that.

On Windows 10 the WinKey + Shift + S keyboard shortcut does open the Snipping portion of the Snip & Sketch tool but does not open Snip & Sketch app. All the Snipping portion will do is capture your screen capture and send it to the clipboard. While this is good for quick multiple captures, it doesn’t allow for the editing functions of the Snip & Sketch app for your capture. To edit your capture (like add your handwritten comments) you need to open the Snip & Sketch app which is in the Start Menu.
If, like the article says, you desire a keyboard shortcut for the app you will need to create a Desktop shortcut to create a keyboard shortcut from. While the article states how to create a Desktop shortcut for the Snipping Tool (which is a shortcut to a shortcut), you will have a tough time with Snip & Sketch and other Windows apps as there is no classical Path to these apps to put as the Location of the app file in the Shortcut.

Here’s how to create a Desktop shortcut to any Windows App:
      1. Open a Run Box (WinKey + R)
      2. Type in Shell:Appfolder and press the Enter key. This open a page with all installed apps listed.
      3. Find your app (listed alphabetically and yes the Snipping Tool is there to create a shortcut with) right click and select Create shortcut. A message will appear that the shortcut can’t be created in this folder and if OK to place on Desktop. Yes, since that is what you want.

You can open the Properties and create your keyboard shortcut. If desired you can make the Desktop shortcut invisible and use just the keyboard shortcut.

There are a lot of Windows apps that I use. I put the shortcuts to those Apps in a folder and added the folder to my Taskbar as a toolbar as shown below. All apps available with 2 clicks. Note: I remove the shortcut arrows from all my shortcuts so the icons shown don’t look like shortcuts, but they are.

Since I use it quite often, I have it pinned to my Taskbar.  For me, a mouse move and click is much quicker than a keyboard shortcut.  All of my regularly used stuff is pinned to the Taskbar.

I have “Snipping Tool” pinned to the Taskbar.  The editing functions are readily available:

Yes, and my shortcut to Snipping Tool has all the edit function; BUT

On Windows 10 the WinKey + Shift + S keyboard shortcut does open the Snipping portion of the Snip & Sketch tool but does not open Snip & Sketch app.

The default keyboard shortcut WinKey + Shift + S will only open the Snipping tool and once the capture is made the app closes…no option for edit.  A shortcut to open the Snipping Tool or the Snip & Sketch will open the app with both capture and edit functions.  If Desktop shortcut is made to either app then one can create a keyboard shortcut for that Desktop shortcut.  That keyboard shortcut will be Ctrl + Alt + (any other key)  if S is chosen for the last key , it will be Ctrl + Alt + S which is different than Windows keyboard shortcut for Screen capturing.

I am happy it works this way.  The WinKey + Shift + S is great to capture several screen captures in a quick manner, then using the keyboard shortcut WinKey + V to open the clipboard and select which capture I want to paste at different locations.  This is a lot easier than the single copy and go paste before you can make another copy.   This form of screen capturing also doesn’t require me to close an app after making the captures which is necessary when you open an app..  When I want to make a screen capture that will need to be editing by adding a comment or pointing an item out, I open the Snip & Sketch app via my shortcut to make that capture.

Windows 11.  I am also on Windows 11 Pro upgraded over Windows 10 Pro, like @RetiredGeek.  My reply to you was with the intent that in Windows 11, The Snipping Tool pinned to the Taskbar retains the editing function.

Type in Shell:Appfolder and press the Enter key.

      Just noticed my typo:

The Run command should be Shell:Appsfolder.  I left out the s in the command which is needed to work.

      My Bad, I’m sorry.

      DCard,

When the popup shows up telling you it’s copied to the clipboard just click on the words “Snip & Sketch” and the app will open with your screen capture.

Must be different on Win 11 or 10 Pro, because on my Win 10 Home 22H2 there is no popup box telling me that its copied after the capture is made and thus no Snip & Sketch words to click. I know it copied the screen by opening the Clipboard Manager (WinKey + V) and seeing it there. Unless it is a quick edit to highlight something, I really don’t use Snip & Sketch. For more editing functions I open the screen capture in XnView.

        Me neither (W10 Home).

I checked SnS settings but couldn’t find anything suggesting that option.

        cheers, Paul
