Well it worked for this month. Last month it was KB3139852. February: KB3134214. They all refer to kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft’s bulletin summary.

Best guess, this won’t help. You need to have all the updates that cause slowness already installed for it to be fast, and one or more new (next month) update may cause slowness.

Woody, it seems to be “the magical cure”, however it has to be seen in context as ER mentioned in the original email. ER had to install a lot of the released patches close to the current date to notice any improvement by installing KB3145739. This is essential and applies to Windows 7 too.
It all goes back to eliminating as much as possible from the superseded updates from calculations.

Woody, I should have mentioned our success with KB3145739 on Vista a few weeks ago. On another item, KBXXXX706 remains checked on Vista. Should we continue waiting?

The KB-article does mention that KB3145739 requires Vista SP2 to be installed.

Installing all updates probably is not necessary either, just installing SP1 and SP2 should do.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve set up a Vista system but if I remember correctly you have to install MANY available updates before SP-1 is even offered.

I think the same process happens again after installing SP-1 before SP-2 will appear for download too.

Like I said, it’s been a long time but the frustration of getting a fresh load to SP-2 level way back then seems to have touched a sensitive nerve.

Apparently an unfixed setting for updating Windows Update on Microsoft’s side prohibits a direct update of Vista RTM to SP1 without installing updates beforehand:

The dependency of various major updates like Service Packs of obscure hotfixes is well known and in many cases the hotfixes are released after the failure of installing the Service Pack for a large number of users. Sometimes even the hotfixes released to fix Service Packs installations are hotfixed and superseded as time goes by. A well-know example is that of Windows 8.1/2012R2 April 2014 Update.

The ‘Windows Defender’ icon has been activated on my desktop for days. When I try to search for an update nothing happens. Is this another slow update? Should I just let it sit there and run until something happens?

That was dated November 2012… by that point in time I was highly recommending to all of my clients running Vista to upgrade to Win 7 if they experienced issues that would require a reload of Vista.

Luckily almost all of them had faith in my advice and they invested their money wisely by upgrading. I should mention that a fair number of those clients are still using those same Win 7 systems today!

I ran my May 2016 Patch Tuesday updates yesterday and last month’s KB3145739 update did not fix this problem on my 32-bit Vista machine. The initial “Checking for updates…” phase took just under 4 hours this month, with the Windows Update service wuauserv (running under the svchost.exe process) completely saturating one of my Intel dual cores and constantly consuming ~50% of my CPU.

I don’t know if it’s relevant, but KB3145739 was delivered to my system during my April 2016 Patch Tuesday updates rather than via a direct download of the .msu installer from the Microsoft Download Center.

For those that don’t remember, something similar happened on the last two years of Windows XP. The difference between then and now is that back then Microsoft took a proactive approach and release patches that fixed the problems. But today, it seems like they just don’t care.

I’ve shared the link you provided for Dalai’s webpage at http://wu.krelay.de/en/ in a few forums and Vista users are now reporting that installing these Windows kernel-mode driver (Win32k.sys) updates solved the problem where “Checking for updates…” would hang for several hours. See copiman’s thread in the VistaForums at http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/304544-current-tips-updates.html#post1406938 for one example.

I haven’t had a chance to try this workaround yet but others have confirmed that this is a temporary solution and that you must install any new Win32k.sys update posted at http://wu.krelay.de/en/ before running your next Patch Tuesday update.
