My computer takes much too long to startup. It loads the desktop and then sits for about a minute before it completes startup. Is there any program that will let you step thru the startup and see what programs are starting? This would be great to see where it is taking all the time. This would be like the old trace program.

I don’t know if this will work but you might check running processes in the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Delete, Task List) & see if any are using an excessive amount of CPU. The problem is that 1) I’ve never tried accessing the Task Manager during startup-it’s always been after startup is done & the system is stable and 2) there are likely to be many processes requiring what would normally seem to be an excessive amount of CPU during startup. All I can suggest is that you make a list & check them out-if all of them are legit then it’s hard to say which is the culprit.

If you’ve got an ‘always on’ Internet connection or on a Local Area Network then it’s likely that the delay is something (possibly more than one thing) updating itself via the network.

You might want to try any of several start up monitor/control programs. They do not log times but do allow you to see and control what is started. Autoruns from Sysinternals Startup Control Panel by Mike Lin Startup Delayer by R2 studios. You can also use Start | Run | Msconfig which is included with XP but not as comprehensive as others.

I’m sure I saw something about this in Woody’s Windows Watch (or one of the other Woody’s newsletters) recently. There was a pointer to a program that would log how long each startup task took. But I can’t find it now. Can anyone else point me the way? I also have a system that takes forever to start up.

        Thanks.
