I have a couple of .pst files on my laptop which I use either directly using outlook 2k in internet only mode or over a network from my desktop machine in corporate / workgroup mode.

There is a huge difference in the startup times, the laptop in internet only mode is quick, the desktop in corporate mode takes up to 2 minutes. Any ideas on what’s going on during that period, and whether it can be speeded up?

    Thanks

An initial quick reply – we’re on a comfort break from a meeting!
Have a look at the desktop Outlook profile to see if you have somehow got offline working switched on. (Tools | Services | Select Microsoft Exchange Server and then click on Properties. Click on the Advanced tab on the resulting Properties dialogue box and look at the check box at bottom left – Enable Offline Use.)
If this is either set, or not set but not completely greyed out, you are taking a complete copy of your mailbox and storing it on your local disk. The slow start up could be due to the synchronisation process which occurs when you start Outlook.
If it is not completely greyed out, you will need to get rid of the offline copy. This is safe to do because a) it is a copy and you do not need offline capability on a desktop.
      1. Remove the tick from the check box, if set.
      2. Close Outlook
      3. Search for the offline file – use *.ost in the search box.
      4. When found, delete the file
      5. Restart Outlook and it should start quicker. Have a look at the services tab again – this time Enable Offline Use should be completely greyed out.
      Hope this helps.

        Thanks, but to no avail….

I guess I should have said that I download everything to my .pst file, so I didn’t even know about offline working! In fact it is NOT selected. About half the time is spent before even bringing up the sign-on dialogue so it feels like it is preparing for something. There is only a tiny .ost file and it is about a month old, so cannot figure.

does file size matter at that stage. I have three pst files that I work with 80mb; 39mb and 32k. The 39mb file is the main one, the 89mb file just is a message store

        Thanks again for quick reply
