I have multiple Windows 10 Pro machines that I am very happy with and still use on a regular basis and I have noticed that all of them seemed to have slowed down after the March 2025 updates.

I have checked the normal items to be sure that there are no other problems but it really hit me when all of them seemed to be affected. I did not go through the pain of rolling any of them back as I have ran into so many problems in the past when I do that.

Is anyone else “feeling” this slow down or is it just me getting more and more impatient as I age ??

I am really hoping there is nothing nefarious going on from our friends at Microsoft to push their Windows 11 agenda ??

    Thanks for any feedback.

      Windows 10 Pro 22H2.
      No slow-down after March updates.
No 3rd party apps “hacking” Windows settings.
All Microsoft Store apps (except Store app) removed. Microsoft store updates disabled.
      CoPilot blocked.
No indexing (I use Everything app). With SSDs there is no need for indexing.
      No OneDrive syncing
      Using Local Account

Chock task manager for Startups, CPU usage.

I remember there were similar discussions on this site pertaining to slow downs and other annoyances when Win 7 was approaching its End Of Support by Msft.  Back then I didn’t notice anything because I was only installing Security updates to my Win 7.  I started doing this also because of the huge, roll up, all or nothing monthly updates.

We’ve seen this behavior before from Microsoft when they were pushing Windows 10 over Windows 7 (article written by Woody Leonhard and references AskWoody!!):

We’ve seen the conspiracy theories before, but it was only about the speed of updates last time:

Frankly, I don’t think Microsoft is intentionally slowing down Windows 7 updates.

My computer is crawling after the march update.  I have a gaming laptop (not used for gaming just for the extra performance on my job as a programmer).  never had an issue until the march updates.

Everything takes twice or 3 times what it used to.  Harddrive space is ok. ssd drive 32gb ram hexacore i7 processor…

I assume you have already checked what’s running in the background:
In TaskManager – check what processes are using the most CPU/Memory/Disk/Power
In TaskManager – check any new Startup apps
In TaskManager – App history for app using most CPU time

Any hardware updates (specifically security oriented related to the processor/Micro code)? What processor do you have?

Check the start up items.  You might want to test and pause/disable some of the boot up items to test.

Like others, not seeing anything here.

Check the start up items in taskmanager.

For a deeper dive checking startup apps, try Sysinternals Autoruns. I’ll occasionally find an app that does not show in task manager. Click on “logon” to see what is started on boot.

huge slow downs on laptop machine .  second time this year. third overall.  there was one  in mid february  and this one now.  extremely similar behaviour and right after updates.    updates make the machine extremely slow trying to foreshadow the need to upgrade by imitating  slow behaviour of EOF  of a old computer.

works fine on desktop machine however

laptop is 3 years old with minimum  software on it.      machine came with win 11 and i deleted it and installed 10 which was working flawlessly until the end of life announcements from microsoft.    after that came the slow down updates. i believe this is the third one.  in last 8 months.   microsoft  pretends we all stupid and will run to buy  or update. but guess what ?  the numbers are saying otherwise. people are not running towards  windows 11.  Its a  POS  system just like win  8 and vista were.

Is your machine short on memory or has a slow / unwell disk? We expect it to be busy immediately post updates while Windows does its tidying.

        cheers, Paul

p.s. Why are you using Windows if it’s that bad?

There’s something I’ve seen and read often on this site when it comes to Win 10 and now Win 11, almost everyone has the Win 10 Pro edition.  I’ve always wondered about that when I read that Win 10 is free.  It’s my understanding that the Win 10 offered for free was not the Professional Edition, but the Home edition.

From what I’ve often read here the Pro edition makes it a lot easier to wrangle your way around the insane update processes and other Win 10 complications.

If you had Pro, the upgrade is to Pro. Home -> Home.

It is simple to wrangle the update process in Home or Pro. Load WUMgr, disable Windows Update and perform all updates manually – it’s what I do.

        cheers, Paul
