We have a number of new PC’s running Windows XP and Office 2000. On one particular PC when we open older Excel workbooks we have a slow activation process. When this user clicks on a cell to start editing the cell, it takes 20 seconds before the field is available for edit. On another PC with same configuration the cell is available immediately. The file that is used is somewhat like a template invoice, in that it is used over and over again and saved with a new name. I have reason to believe that the file may have been created as long ago as Excel 4.0. The interesting thing is why do we have the problem on one PC while on others in that workgroup it works fine? Thanks for any ideas and suggestions.

AskWoody PlusOctober 23, 2002 at 11:22 pm #626227The first thing I would try would be to start Excel without any addins or startup files by:
Start, Run,
“C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeExcel.exe” /automationThen try creating a workbook from the template and see what happens. If it works normally, then there is an addin or a hidden workbook in the XLStart directory that is causing the problem.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 24, 2002 at 2:53 pm #626451Thanks Legare, we tried what you suggested. There were no add-ins running so that wasn’t the problem. I did go and change some Novell Client caching and commitment switches, but that doesn’t affect the lag time starting up an older spreadsheet. This is something we can work around, just more of an annoyance. Thanks so much for your thoughts on this one.

AskWoody PlusOctober 24, 2002 at 3:47 pm #626469If running without addins and XLStart hidden workbooks does not solve the problem, then the next two things I could think of would be recalc time(does the sheet have circular references that are being delt with by itterations?) or auto macros. One other possibility could be anti-virus software on the workstation or on the server.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 28, 2002 at 4:03 pm #627143Legare, thanks for your additional thoughts on this annoyance. There are no circular references and or auto macros. We had already disabled our anti-virus software earlier to no avail–it made no difference. In the last couple of days we’ve discovered that there are a few others with the problem, too. A very difficult problem to figure out! And also since it isn’t threatening not high in priority if you know what I mean. We are looking at issues with some of our hubs and maybe this will be one of the things solved with increasing the throughput. Again, thanks for your time. Judy
