Apologies. There’s a reason why we’ve been down so much. The site’s under a multi-faceted attack, from someone who appears to know what he/she/it/they

AskWoody_MVPSeptember 30, 2017 at 10:22 am #134759Amazing. With headlines like “…man, there are a lot of outstanding bugs”, who could possibly want to make your web site unavailable to the world?
I’m sure there are those who think the “negativity” expressed here must be the prime reason Windows 10 is falling on its face. Not that it could have anything to do with the programmers who have no clue what they’re doing, or managers who are actively driving Windows into the ground.
The really funny thing is that Microsoft doesn’t realize that the system management wisdom you share and the folks who are struggling to push aside the recently implemented garbageware and bring out the remaining good in Windows 10 are the reasons they didn’t fail years ago.
Best of luck getting the site running smoothly again.
P.S., This is extremely basic, but I’ll say it: If it’s being hammered with a denial of service attack from identifiable external sources, consider adding “Deny from 11.22.33.44” type commands to your .htaccess file. I once had my company web site hit continuously from several sources in China and those commands cleaned things right up.

In which case, the IP blocking ends up preventing innocent users from visiting the website.
Another issue: Visits from a small group of users (or even a single user) with rapidly-changing IP addresses (ie. changing every 1-5 secs) may look like DoS attacks, but they are not.
Such users are assigned dynamic IP addresses by their ISPs using transparent proxies for censorship reasons &/or to recycle the limited pool of IP addresses. Blocking the affected range of IP addresses wlll likewise end up preventing this group of innocent users from accessing the website.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 3, 2017 at 11:56 am #134910It’s really sad what’s happening to this site and I’m sorry for you, Woody. I know getting this Lounge up and running was a long time goal of yours and now, this is happening. Whether it’s a former user here that was censored right off the board, some Windows 10 fanboys or Microsoft themselves (highly unlikely, but nothing surprises me anymore), it won’t change the course Windows is heading in. We’re witnessing the fall of another tech giant.
I hope you guys can get this sorted out and halted, but depending on who is doing it, that could be anywhere from extremely difficult to nearly impossible and I am hoping on you guys beating those odds. I’ve learned a lot from this site as have many others, but it’s getting harder and harder to imagine this site returning to it’s usual functioning self as each day passes, comments being wiped routinely, backups being used and little progress (at least as seen from this end) being made.
If anything, this has only colored my negative perception of Microsoft an even darker color than before. Best of luck to you and the people helping you, Woody. I guess I was too harsh in my criticism of them not doing a good job. This is obviously way more serious than just run of the mill errors.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 4, 2017 at 6:40 am #135236Woody,
GREAT JOB getting things back up and running. Seeing your site up again this morning is a VERY refreshing moment for me. I hope the rest of the world will breathe a BIG sigh of relief this morning.
Best wishes for the future.

AskWoody PlusOctober 8, 2017 at 4:12 pm #135863Sigh. Lots of W-WW sites get attacked. One of my alternate e-mail providers, VFEmail .net, was nearly bombed off the Internet before somebody informed it of mitigation manuevers.
There are so many attacks on W-WW sites that it is honestly tough to determine which are intentional, and which are from entities that mainly want to be malicious. I wish you success in fending off these salvos.Important links you can use, without the monetization pitch = https://pqrs-ltd.xyz/bookmark4.html
