The following problem occurs when shutting down my Dell (L400) laptop…it only occurs if 1. I’ve opened an application (any app) and 2. I’m logged into our Novell network.

An ‘illegal operation’ error occurs on Explorer. Also, the Advanced Power Management dialog box opens, and a specialty app that is in my Startup folder opens. Finally, the wheel on my Microsoft Intellimouse does not work when the laptop is restarted.

Again, this problem does not occur if I am not connected to the network. I removed and reinstalled the 3com network adapter, but no help.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

At home AND at work, I do not run many of the things that are in the Startup tab by default. Go to Start-Run and type msconfig and hit enter. MAKE SURE YOU NOT ALL THINGS THAT ARE CHECKED. Uncheck all but your virus checker and systray, and see if it shuts down any better. Add each one back, one at a time, and shut down again. You’ll shortly find the one that causes problems.

      Hi
For all my win2kP shutdowns I use a small utility called Active Shutdown. It sits in the systray and can be configured to log-off, restart or shutdown from a double click. It can also force apps to shut down immediately. It might work for you.
      Get it from my site.

Thank you both for your assistance. I’ll be trying out both!
