Last couple days PC is not shutting down or hibernating properly. Not sure if this is correct forum but thougt it a good place to start. When I shut down or hibernate the process is normal unitil I hear the hard drive “clunk” (heads park?? – allways done this seemed normal). However the fans inside he case keep running and after a moment the computer restarts and goes to iether the prehibernate state or log on (depending whether hibernate of shut down was selected)

So not sure where to start – could it be WinXP, HDD or M/B? Only significant s/w activity was installatino of Norton Internet Security recently.

    Any pointers will help

    Thanks

    Simon

Simon, This is one for the experts, and I am not one of them. It`s just that I don`t believe in coincidences. Have you read Woody`s warning about these two patches?
“Microsoft’s latest security patches, 813489: April 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer (IE) 6 Service Pack 1 and 330994: April 2003, Security Update for Outlook Express (OE) 6 SP1 are giving PC users running Windows XP and Norton Internet Security (NIS) some, uh, challenges in being able to access the Internet after their install.”
I know it is not the Internet you are having trouble with, but you never can tell with individual systems. Have you installed these patches? Seems a coincidence to me that you just installed Norton Internet Securities.

OK back up and running……. Day after posted puter would not boot at all. Disconnected everything except video and memory and it just sat there with fans running when power applied. Swapped power supplies and it got better – just. Fans only ran when switched on, still would not boot. figured it must be a h/w problem.

swapped out video card then cleared CMOS, yehaaa boot beep and startup.

Replaced everything and boots / shutsdown each time so far.

So not sure if power supply is dodgy or if m/b CMOS got corrupt. I’ll let it run for a few days and maybe fiddle if I get bored one day, but for now its OK and i’m back

Thanks for the suggestions, dont think it is a windows problem though.
