But I think this “Oh my goodness, we need to stop texting” reaction is similar to my complaint about the guidance to patch everything immediately. Such guidance lacks nuance. It assigns no weight regarding content and instead treats my conversation about Costco the same as one about nuclear codes.

Brava! It warms the heart to hear a voice of reason on this issue. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been admonished (or worse) online by neurotics declaring that You Must Apply Patches Right Now!!! or Else Suffer the Consequences.

I totally agree. Thanks as always, Susan. for your sage advice.

We must brace ourselves, however, for next October. I know that many people will be instructing me to upgrade to Win11 immediately as MS will have withdrawn support for Win10. They won’t understand that it’s only free support that will have ended, and that whether through MS or 0patch there will be perfectly satisfactory support being continued.

0patch will be much cheaper, of course, and based on my experience with it on Win7 it will be highly efficient and leave me free from the monthly feeling in the pit of my stomach every time I hit the “check for updates” button!

Of course e-mail is not normally secure.  And nowadays in the corporate world it’s almost easier to use the “chat” function within our Microsoft Teams environment, especially since you can easily see if someone is responding to you.  But is this Teams “chat” function secure?

I avoid the “Sky is falling” Chicken Little articles anymore. Nothing more then people trying to get more clicks. Many times they often advise rediculous and extreme soluutions like stop texting. As if most people would actuallly ever do that or should do that. Offering extreme unreasonable solutions is not helpful. That tells you right away the writer is clearly not thinking logically.

Texting is still as secure as it has ever been in recent times.

Takeaway: Never send confidential/sensitive information via text — or any other insecure communication medium. This has always been true.

Note: Many are working (and succeeding) at removing your ability to communicate securely. Whether it is your phone carrier, OS manufacturer, device hardware manufacturer, government, or all of the above — you are being targeted.

The FBI (and EU) can’t promote using encrypted messages while at the same time demand ‘backdoors‘ into devices.

I totally agree…the amount of security one should use is based upon what you are protecting. A vault with 24 hour armed guards is too much security for your family photos and placing your life savings in your mattress is too little security.

For determining how much security ask yourself how you will be affected if the item is lost or compromised and how much security you are comfortable with to prevent that from happening knowing nothing will ever be 100% secure.

For me, they can intercept and read all my spam texts they want as they will get more info from them than my text messages.

This may be the source. Texting ban

Not too sure just what you mean by that.

Are you suggesting that perhaps a total ban on texting is the solution, and you typed the word “source” instead by mistake?

I kind of thought that was the case…that you’d tried to include a link, but the link didn’t cooperate! Thanks for the clarification!

However, the story your link goes to has been told numerous times over the last several days.  😐

Just the opposite.  We should flood the airwaves. At the end of every text put “taiwan belarus antifa”.  The one line C code for the RSA algorithm is also appropriate.  Anyone remember it?
