I seem to have a registry issue as today I no longer could click and successfully launch a Quicklaunch shortcut to a desktop folder containing some remote tools. I noted that the My Computer menu item does the same thing, though the shortcuts in my menu that point to applications work. It appears any shortcut that is to a folder is failing. My Documents, My Recent Docs, Pictres, Music My Computer and My Network Places generates the error. “This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.”
I have used the VBS file from Doug Knox, xp_folder_open.vbs, to fix My Computer’s desktop but the Quicklaunch and the start menu links generate the above message. The original behavior of the desktop My Computer, after I noticed it was broken, was to open up the Search window rather than the normal My Computer display.
I wonder if there is a registry key or setting that no longer has the appropriate information and that is why this behavior.
TIA,
Jester
