When you assign a custom keyboard shortcut, you can specify where it will be stored. The default is Normal.dot, making the shortcut available to all documents, but if you store the shortcut in another template, it will only be available in documents based on that template.

Open your template or a document based on the template.
      Select Tools | Customize… and click Keyboard…
Select Nornal.dot in the ‘Save changes in’ dropdown list.
Click in the ‘Press new shortcut key’ box.
Press Ctrl+Alt+4, then click the ‘Remove’ button.
Next, select your template in the ‘Save changes in’ dropdown list.
Select Styles in the Categories list and Heading 4 in the Styles list.
Click in the ‘Press new shortcut key’ box.
Press Ctrl+Alt+4, then click the ‘Assign’ button.
Click ‘Close’ twice to return to the document/template.
Quit Word, and reply ‘Yes’ to the prompt to save the template (and Normal.dot, if you have set ‘Prompt to save Normal.dot’ in Tools | Options…)
