I’ve been running Windows 10 Pro 19H2 for some time (and no, it didn’t update). My desktop icons were not displaying the blue up arrow in the lower left-hand corner indicating that they were a shortcut. Suddenly, those arrows are being displayed. I realize I can use a registry hack to get rid of them, but I would like to understand what might have caused the arrows to show up after all this time. I realize it is not a problem, but I don’t particular like them, and I can’t figure out what triggered this. I’d appreciate any insights. Thank you.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 7, 2021 at 4:38 am #2405007Some change triggered this. You do not need to install major update to change behavior of Windows, maybe sme minor feature update caused this, also if you are able to disable blue arrow by registry editing, maybe some application changed that.
TBH I dont really know. My arrows are white background, black arrow.

AskWoody_MVPDecember 7, 2021 at 12:36 pm #2405102If you did not use the registry hack to get rid of the shortcut arrows in the first place, then I suspect that they missed having the arrow added to the icon when first constructed by Windows. These icons were saved in a cache that was used to reload the icons on boot ups and Windows didn’t need to remake them. Actually, some users would call this good luck. If this cache got deleted (some cleaning software) or considered corrupt by Windows, Windows would recreate the icons and this time the shortcut arrows were added. If you want to remove the shortcut arrows, you will need to do the registry hack. I use the hack because I don’t like the shortcut arrows on my custom made icons.
