Another year, another set of Apple updates — and another set of popular app developers who could lose their livelihoods. Here’s what Apple Sherlocked at WWDC 2024.
Long before Spotlight, Apple developed a search tool it called Sherlock. An enterprising developer, though, then released an app called Watson that enhanced Sherlock — for a while.

When Apple next updated Sherlock, that release incorporated everything that Watson did, so Watson was now out of business…What’s not arguable is that this practice became known as Sherlocking. Very many times since, Apple has Sherlocked other popular apps…this time :

    Grammarly
    Password managers
    Window managers
    Calculators
    Calendars and task managers
    AI and ChatGPT…

    * On the hardware side the new free iMessage / SMS using Satellite when there is no wi-fi/cellular connections kills subscriptions to Garmin’s InReach .

Here we go again….why must Apple continually bombard us with new features when most of us are probably satisfied with the status quo. Please just concentrate on OS stability, security, and ease of use. Not all of us have the skill sets of Apple software developers. We just want to use our Macs and iPhones without having to relearn how to use them.

The apps that Apple Sherlocked at WWDC 2024

Apple has been on a spree of late, announcing a host of new features for its various devices earlier this week at its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC).

But a lot of those features were already available to some extent on Apple devices through third-party apps. So, just like the past few years, we will examine the ideas that Apple “Sherlocked” in this year’s updates…

when most of us are probably satisfied with the status quo.

I am not sure the ‘most of us’ do.
Apple does update OS stability, security, and ease of use as demonstrated by the new Apple Intelligence.

      * You can stay on iOS 17 and iPhone 13, with updates for the next ~4 years and skip any new features. The same is true for MacOS.

Apple “sherlocking” features from ~10 3rd party software into the OS is an example of ‘ease of use’

      * A new life saving feature in iOS 18 : iMessage / text vis satellite where there is no celluar/wi-fi connection. Apple’s SOS via satellite already saved numerous lives

      * With MacOS Sequoia you can remote control your iPhone even when it is in another room and locked. You can browse data, copy files, launch apps…

      * If you have Android family/friends iOS 18 will add RCS.

Spyware that no one asked for (judging by the general reaction to Copilot/Recall).

      Copilot/Recall

What has Copilot/Recall to do with Apple Intelligence ?

        Nor does Microsoft.

      Apple Intelligence is opt-IN

      As well as using ChatGPT.

      • #2680191

When these new OSs are released to the public, hopefully someone on this Forum will post a list of the opt ins and opt outs plus any other potential problem apps or features.  PK Cano for example?

@pkcano…would you be willing to compile a list of Sequoia and iOS 18 opt in/out features and other new feature potential problems that we need to know before or after updating? While sites such as Macrumors may have something like this, an in house AskWoody listing would be very helpful for those of us that will probably update but at the same time like the status quo.

          Regards.
