Shared Printers Win 7 / WinXP

Hello WinSecrets People:

We have just bought a Dell Laptop with Win7 Home Premium (French language) preinstalled. It is connected to to my Home Network via Wireless router. It is the only computer in the house with Win7. The others are all WinXP (variously Home, Pro and Media Center editions).

There are two shared printers connected to a desktop running XP Home: a Laserjet 1320 and a Samsung CLP-315. There is also a Xerox Phaser-8550 which is networked.

When I have connected the shared printers on the other computers in the past, they have been able to find drivers in WinXP (I guess) because I never had to download drivers for those printers before. But when I tried to set them up in the Win7, I got a message that Win7 could not find appropriate drivers.

Do I have to find those drives somewhere, and install them before being able to share those printers on Win7?

The Phaser, if I remember correctly, does need to be installed separately on each computer.

You should install the Win 7 drivers for the printers. The HP driver can be found here, the Samsung driver here, and the Xerox driver here.

I do support on the Compuserve Forums dealing with laptops, PCHardware and Windows itself. Personally I am not an expert in particular with 64 bit systems since I do not use them (yet ….)

However it seems to be the case that there is an unresolved “situation” that has not been addressed by Microsoft when printers are physically connected to an XP computer and a 64 bit system computer wishes to access them via the LAN and that this is so even if there are 64 bit drivers available.

There seem to be two possible workarounds:

[*]If the printers are network enabled (or if you have or get a wireless print server to connect them to) then attaching the printers to the network enables the two computers to access them regardless of 32 bit or 64 bit.

[*]The other workaround (I believe but am not certain about) is to connect the printers to the 64 bit machine and let the 32 bit machine see them via the LAN but this may not be possible. This is a case where the XP and the 64 bit machines needs the 64 bit driver installed.

But the core of the matter seems to be that there is an unresolved situation that Microsoft have not addressed.
