Shared File, HungApp, XP Professional (Excel 2003)

Hi,

I have a large shared excel file on the network (~7000 KB). I have 7 users who use this file. All have Excel 2003. 3 have XP Professional and 4 have Windows 2000. The users with Windows 2000 can open this file. The users with XP professional end up with a HungApp error (the Send, Don’t send dialog box). Has anyone heard of this? Any help would be appreciated!

Does the workbook contain VBA code? If so, are there references to object libraries that could be in a different location on Windows XP than on Windows 2000?

Hi Hans,

It does contain a lot of VB code … but, I’m a “self-taught” VBA coder and have not intentially used object libraries … so, I think the answer is no …

Have all updates been applied to Excel 2003 on the Windows XP PCs?

What happens if you disable macros when opening the workbook on a Windows XP machine?
What happens if you enable macros but hold down the Shift key when the workbook opens?

Hi Hans,

Fortunately, when I went to try your suggestions, I found that I COULD now open a shared Excel file when there was someone else in it. I think it was a network traffic issue (and, the IT person now thinks so too).
But, thanks! And, by the way, what would holding the Shift Key down when opening a workbook do?

Holding the shift key down when opening a workbook keeps any Auto Macros like AutoOpen from executing.

Aside from trying to solve your problem…

I would strongly suggest to stop doing this process using a shared Excel file. Excel is by no means a multi-user application.
As you have experienced, sharing Excel files may cause trouble: crashes, loss of data, records not being updated, loss of entire file.

If you need to work on information simultaniously with more than 1 (!) user, don’t use Excel.

You will benefit hugely by porting this entire thing into e.g. Access.

Hi Jan,

Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, this company wishes to use the Shared feature in Excel primarily for the Audit Trail it produces. Having multiple users is simply a benefit. And, this company, doesn’t have Access or any Access people.
