You can use the combination chart that’s in the custom chart tab. The column-line chart should do it. I’ve attached an example. You have to fool around with the order to get it right.

You will need to change the gap to zero on the bar chart. To do that double click on the series and choose the option tab.

I want to be able to shade date ranges in excel charts, and for the life of me I can’t figure out how. I’m *sure* this is something in the manual, but I can’t find anything in the help or on the web. Here’s an example of what I want to do:

My goal is something similar, to shade the date ranges in which the US economy was officially in a recession. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Thank you! That works very well. I’ve already added this to about half a dozen graphs.

I guess now my problem is, how can I get two lines with the date-shading bar graph in the background, all on the same axis?

I guess this stems from the problem that I don’t know how to change the graph type of an individual series without applying an entirely now graph type to the entire chart. I don’t see any options under ‘Format Data Series’. Am I looking in the right place?

I’m not sure how to change individual series either. It would make everything much easier. I was able to add another line by setting up the chart with one line series, then copying the data from the cells, and using paste special after the chart is selected to paste into the chart.

In the paste special dialogue box select new series. I’m not sure why it’s pasted as a line and not as a bar.

I’m attaching the revisions, so you can always this one.
