Sever crashing on backup

We are using Windows SBS 2003 server with a RAID array and have been using Acronis True Image Echo Server forWindows9.5 for backup to an external USB HDD.

Until a few days ago all was working fine and then every time a backup was done the system crashed and it needed turning off before a reboot.

Initially it was thought Acronis was at fault but a subsequent crash using MS backup also produced the same result.

Anyone got any ideas?

Is Windows Server up-to-date with service packs and patches?

Have you checked the event logs?

Is the crash a BSOD? If so, what are the stop details?

Have you run any hardware tests?

VSS may be the culprit – both backups use VSS to snapshot the disk first. Check the Event Log for errors associated with the crash.
Have you run out of space on the disk?
Is the disk / controller flakey – check SMART on the disk?
