• Service Pack 2 will not install

I am redoing a donated computer for a local non-profit thrift store. I loaded Windows XP and am trying to update to Service Pack 2. I have the SP2 disk. But while it is extracting, it comes up with a FILE IS CORRUPTED message and stops. I tried a second SP2 disk and got the same message.

What would be causing the “corrupted message”?

Can I install Service Pack 3 without first installing Service Pack 2?

    Thanks for your input.

You can install SP3 over SP1 or SP2 but NOT original XP.

As far as the “corrupted message” goes, it could be the CD reader itself. Can you use the CD on another system?

Try cleaning the disk with a non abrasive toothpaste and rub it over the entire disk then rinse well with lukewarm water, then dry well with
        a cotton towel or rag

You can also go into internet explorer browser then go to the windows update page from the drop down menu
and you should see an update available for your windows xp there

I just updated from xp 2 to xp 3 using microsoft update website

I’d try it on another cd reader first. If that’s OK, copy the files to a USB stick and go from there.

did you do a compatibility check on the computer? i tried the same thing on a dell computer that is circa 1998-1999 with only a 400mhz processor, 384mb memory, and15gb hard drive(check of hard drive found no problems or bad sectors),and windows xp would load up only “basic” xp. i even had problems with the basic load as some files xp wanted to install were not even found on the OEM disk. i ran windowsME on this same computer for years with hardly any problems. sp2 never would install and in fact, nothing worked after attempting this update. after approx 6 formats and reloads of xp,i finally gave up. i guess a new motherboard, processor, and memory upgrade will have to be my next course of action. i’m definitely not a “computer geek”, but i’ve been around long enough to be able to do almost anything i’ve attempted( *with a lot of help from Fred Langa, among others) on the 5 or 6 computers i’ve owned(1 of which i built myself). just a little input, hope it helps shed some light on your problem. good luck.

If the computer is online download this to the desktop and run it.
This is the full install package.
You shouldnt get any disk errors with it.
