Yesterday (on startup) I got the following message:

SERVER BUSY
“This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy.
Choose ‘Switch To’ to activate the busy program and correct the problem”
[Switch To] [Retry] [Cancel]

‘Switch To’ or ‘Retry’ doesn’t appear to accomplish anything (‘Cancel’ is deactivated). In fact, you can click anywhere on the message window and it will close. The OS will continue to load (although sluggishly). I had installed WinFaxPro the day before and assumed this may have caused the problem; so, I removed it from the Startup menu and tried again – no change. I then performed an uninstall and tried again – no change. This is a stand alone PC with (obviously) no shared devices. Something is going on in the background, but I can’t figure out what it is. I estimate that loading any other programs is now taking between five and ten times as long. My Access db (12mb) is just crawling.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hmmm. Well, I did discover a few applications in startup (MSCONFIG) that I can live without, and one that I was entirely unaware of (I’ll need to speak with my daughter concerning that). There is a noticable improvement in process speed, yet not so much in startup and the error message still appears. Headed in the right direction (and I can live with the results so far), but still don’t get why I’m getting the error msg at startup.

Thanks for the assist! Typically, Mr. Gates has left us with a number of issues to deal with. I decided to go to an even earlier restore point (one prior to MS “up”grades) and, wonder of wonders, everything is fine now. I meant to jot down the numbers before removing them so I could share that info, but got distracted and, well, uh, oops. Thanks again for your input.
