Anyone else seeing this on Server 2012 R2 DC’s?

Just to clarify I have 4 of these 2012 R2 dc’s that started doing this at the same time. The updates install in the windows update, upon restart the updates go to 30%, the server restarts and the updates go to 94% and then say Cannot complete the updates, Undoing changes, it backs it out and lands you on the login screen. This behavior repeats as you can see from the repeated failures. Oh and it only happens on DC’s the workgroup servers install these updates just fine. Hope this is helpful. – Mike -

ManagerFebruary 20, 2023 at 12:04 am #2535859So here’s what I would try first:
- manually download a patch and see if you can manually install it.
- Got antivirus? if so disable it.
- reboot before trying number 1
Holler back if that doesn’t resolve it?

AskWoody PlusFebruary 20, 2023 at 2:32 pm #2536051So I feel like a heel. I found a 2012 R2 WORKGROUP server that is failing the same February updates with the same errors. The common element with the four 2012 R2 DC’s that are also failing??? They all have a Quickbooks client installed. The four DC’s are Quickbooks servers while the workgroup server just had the client installed (was used in the past by their accountant to remote in and was no longer needed). So I uninstalled the QB client from the workgroup server and voila’ the updates succeeded. I have one other customer 2012 R2 DC that I’m going to test this theory on tonight. It was their QB server before they went to QB online and it still has QB installed, and it is failing the updates. I’m going to uninstall QB tonight and see if the updates succeed to validate the theory.
Can the moderator change the title of the post to remove the domain controllers reference since that now appears to be inaccurate? Many thanks.

AskWoody PlusFebruary 21, 2023 at 4:57 pm #2536365This has nothing to do with Quickbooks. This is a known issue with Server 2012 R2

I reported it to Aria so hopefully this will get fixed up soon.

AskWoody PlusMarch 1, 2023 at 1:12 pm #2538388Apologies for my tardiness in responding. I can confirm that the Quickbooks reference was unintentionally misleading… that was not the issue at all. My four failing domain controllers indeed have the Essentials role and my four workgroup servers are indeed straight up 2012 R2 – no Essentials role. Many thanks for flushing all this out I will retry the updates on the four dc’s tonight.
