Is there any way, short of WSUS, SCCM or a third party equivalent, to select which updates get installed on/by a Windows 10 Pro computer?

I’ve seen so-called solutions are allow one to defer updates for a while but not dis-allow specific updates at all and this is not what I’m asking about.

Windows 7 made this pretty easy to do on an induvial machine but it seems not possible on Windows 10?  I hope I’ve missed something!

    Thank you!

The answer is no. You will need to use Microsoft’s showorhide or 3rd party apps.

Thank you – not what I hoped to hear but at least I won’t waste any more time looking for a different answer.

You can rip the guts out of the update process,(in Pro via policy editor and Regedit and always disable Windows update and medic services after an update) don’t ask me what, I don’t remember but it is working for me (for now). Then I use Susan Bradley’s Master Patch List to chose what Updates to chose in Windows Catalog, usually cumulative and a couple of others. I use “Belarc Advisor” to check if I have all the needed security updates. I would not recommend this but it is what I am using and you asked. Remember to image before foraying into new territory or any update. 😱

Just because you don't know where you are going doesn't mean any road will get you there.

Thank you!  I too am a devoted fan of Susan Bradey.  She was my oracle when I ran WSUS for a former employer that does have WSUS in place.  She still is, for that matter, but her recommendations are a lot harder to implement without WSUS.

For example, here are her October recommendations for Windows 10, 1903:
      Win 10 1903
      4522355
      10/24/2019
      Optional

      Win 10 1903
      4521863
      10/8/2019
      Install

      Win 10 1903
      4517389
      10/8/2019
      Install

      Win 10 1903
      4524100
      10/8/2019
      Install

      Win 10 1903
      4524147
      10/3/2019
      Defer

Short of writing my own app – or at least learning enough about Windows Updates t0 write it- how does one omit 4522355 and 4524147 while installing the other 3 updates.

        Use Group Policy:
        Computer configuration\Administrative templates\Windows Components
under Windows Updates\Windows Update for Business

Quality Updates are the Security CUs released on Patch Tuesday.
Preview Builds are the releases on C, D, E weeks like 4522355 and 4534147

      Actually…

to select which updates get installed on/by a Windows 10 Pro computer?

The answer is no. You will need to use Microsoft’s showorhide or 3rd party apps.

Shouldn’t it be possible to use PowerShell to poke at the update process until it does that?

I mean, https://www.powershellgallery.com/packages/zWindowsUpdate/1.2 has things like “-ExcludeKB” and “-ExcludeOptional” …

Probably easier to figure out from that module’s PowerShell source than start from just the general manuals at least, but still sort of “highly technical” 😉
