We have a machine (with an NT4 OS+SP 6A) where every time the user starts MS Word (Office 2k 2r1+sr2)after a fresh login, one or more autorecoved documents pop-up. If you close them and chose not to save them (As you would) and reopen MS Word, these files do not pop-up again until you login again. If we try to uncheck the box in tools>options>save that disallows autorecovery, then close the program, when reopened the box will be rechecked by itself! We have gone through the registry looking for any abnormalities, and yes we did find some… but the registry will not save either on closing. We were successful in stopping this from happening briefly when we rebuilt the users profile, but it has since returned with up to 6 different recovered documents (Usually 3 open) automaticly opening all at once, all by themselves. We even went so far as to purge the system of all .asd files and to turn off all options in the users profile for MS Word and Office 2k. Still, they just keep coming back! lol
This is the only machine on the network of 20 or so other machines that has this problem. It is a Dell with a ghosted image HDD identical to all other machines on the network.
Please help us out if you can… I’d like to be able to sleep again soon!

    Thanks

Go to the folder where the default files are stored and clear ALL of the Word temp files. Most will start with a ~ and need to be deleted. Also if the recover file is in a different folder, also remove ALL of the temp files from there.
The recover is run when ever Word finds ANY left over temp files that were NOT save properly.

To build on what Dave said, it could be the user… does he/she close Word by using the “X” in the upper right-hand corner? It has been known to cause corruption to normal.dot. It is preferable to use File / Exit.

      Hi Neo,

This option is stored in the Registry and Word doesn’t update this information until Exit. So if the change is not allowed to be saved then I’d say the users profile is locked down. To verify this, see if the same thing occurs if an Administrator is logged in.

As for the AutoRecover files, you might want to check the permissions assigned to the user for this folder. If one isn’t specified in Tools/Options/File Locations then Word uses the Temp folder. In the event that there isn’t a valid Temp folder then the document folder is used.

Many thanks for the help guys, especially BAM! YWe took a look and the Temp folder was all @#$!% up! We’re going to do some messing around today… We’ll let you know what happens.

      Cheers!

Just today I encountered a user who is having a similar problem in that every time they open Word they get an autorecover file. They have “Saved As” and that works until the next time they log in.

So, I’m having them try the solutions I just read here. I’ll let you know if this works.

This is such a wonderful support tool! Thanks for everyone’s hard work. fanfare

I just wanted to thank you for THE solution to the problem one of my users was having. There was an .asd file that way reaking havoc and deleting it was the solution. And in the spirit of Halloween, frank spook
