I’m not sure what to make of this, but when I turned my Windows 7 machine on a little while ago I was surprised to see a notification pop up that there were new updates available.

    Here’s what it was:

Security Intelligence Update for Windows Defender Antivirus – KB915597 (Version 1.315.12.0)
    Download size: 49.3 MB
    Update type: Important
Install this update to revise the files that are used to detect viruses, spyware, and other potentially unwanted software. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.

I checked my update history and the last update I was offered for Windows Defender was:

Definition Update for Windows Defender – KB915597 (Definition 1.235.23.0)
    Installation date: ‎01/‎10/‎2017 9:19 AM
    Installation status: Successful
    Update type: Important
Install this update to revise the definition files used to detect spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.

I don’t even use Windows Defender, so why all of a sudden after almost 2 1/2 years am I being offered an update for it?

Should I go ahead and install it or would it just be better to hide it?

Any insight, advice and expertise on this matter is greatly appreciated.

If your paying for an anti virus  you can save money by using  the free defender instead.  I have W7 and still use Microsoft Security Essentials.

No, I’m not paying for an anti-virus product and thanks for your feedback.

As mentioned above, all I’m wondering is:

      1. Why after all this time I’m suddenly being offered a current update for Windows Defender;
      2. Is it safe to install; or
      3. Should I just hide it instead?

Even though I have another anti-virus installed and I’m using it instead of Windows Defender?

Believe me, I’m not doubting your wisdom in any way whatsoever, I just thought you weren’t supposed to have more than one anti-virus program being used concurrently.

Windows Defender is not an anti-virus in Win7, only in Win8.1 and Win10. So you don’t have a conflict running two anti-viruses.

Any theories as to why the long lapse in time between being offered updates?

      • #2260590

        In a word ….. Microsoft.
They are probably messing with the supersedence (again).

I’m not trying to split hairs here, but may I ask why then the Definition Update v1.235.23.0 installed on ‎01/‎10/‎2017 says:

“Install this update to revise the definition files used to detect spyware and other potentially unwanted software.”

While the current Security Intelligence Update for Windows Defender Antivirus – KB915597 (Version 1.315.12.0) says:

“Install this update to revise the files that are used to detect viruses, spyware, and other potentially unwanted software.”

and now refers to itself as Windows Defender Antivirus ?

Again, I’m not doubting your wisdom in anyway whatsoever, but instead trying to expand my knowledge.

I would hazard a guess this may just be a generic title used by Microsoft for Win 7, 8.1 & 10 as well as yet another attempt to confuse their users (such as myself) in any additional way possible.

Yes! that time after Jan 14, microsoft had said will stop All updates for W7. And i think YEAY it won’t keep popping up every few minutes interrupting me. Then this week End May receive as what the first person share: Security Intelligence Update for Windows Defender Antivirus – KB915597 (Version 1.315.12.0)
      Download size: 49.3 MB
      Update type: Important

No I won’t install anymore, some of the updates caused rebooting problems. Our systems not that young, i DON’T WISH to upgrade to Windows 10! with IT shops closed now i want to ensure my current Win 7 won’t be having freezing issues and having to press the power button manually! Doesn seem of much use if patches always causing issues microsoft :((

Look at the name of the title.  Intelligence (AI)  Security (not for you)  It installed itself without my permission when I had Never update and Never look for any checked.   Then it can never be uninstalled. It keeps you from downloading all kinds of files it doesn’t want you to have and it goes into your files and deletes them without your permission.  We are boxed in more and more every day.  If I wanted to be controlled on a computer I’d use an Apple device.  Last time I updated was in 2017, no issues til now.
