It has been several months since I have worked with security and I am stuck!!

I have create a new workgroup file, added a password for admin, create a DEVELOPER user and gave all admin rights to the developer. Ran the wizard. I have created all my users and groups and assigned permissions. Now this is where I am stuck.

When I log on as developer – great but when I try to log on as a restricted user – I get an error message that I don’t have permission to use the database.

What’s missing? Is it just Friday 13th????

Check your user permissions and see what you gave them. It sounds like they don’t have any permissions for your database. If they can get in but can’t see or do anything, you need to give them at least read permissions. Depending on how your forms, etc., are built, they may need more. Check your queries as well. If you set their run permissions to run with user’s permissions, then change them to owner’s.

        Charlotte,

I have assign more than read permissions to everything. The data entry people can not print reports so I did not change anything there.

When I double click on the icon and log in as a data entry person, I get the error message then.

I am unsure about changing the ownership. Can you explain that again. I have my Developer user with admin rights and it seems to have all the rights to every option. I have a user for Directors who can print and enter data and data entry group who can only enter data.

I have deleted the secure file and the .mdw file and started over but still no luck. I don’t understand. I do have a lot of vb attached to my reports. Would this be causing problems?

        Thanks,
        Deborah

Just to elaborate on Charlotte’s answer (only because setting the rights to the database itself confused me way back when I was first playing with securing databases), go to Tools | Security | User and Group Permissions and scroll the Object type right back to the very first option, which is Database, and check the permissions there. Took me a while way back when to notice that I could scroll the Object type back before Table.

That was my problem….is that a bug, that it does not immediately go to the database instead of the table.

Thanks for your help!!! I really thought I was going crazy.

The fact that it goes to “Table” isn’t a bug; actually, it goes to whatever type of object you were looking at before going into Security – try looking at your forms and then going into Security.

The fact that you never see “Database” until you realize that there’s a scrollbar there I would consider rather quirky. aflame
