    Hi

I’ve read the various discussions on access control and encrypting, but can’t find the answer to my specific problem.

I want to guard against someone stealing my standalone PC and getting access to my documents.

i personally think the NTFS should be sufficient for most people. It’s as secure as your password is. if the files are so sensitive that this is not good enough, you may want to consider a removable drive that can be locked in a safe when not in use.

Thanks, Mary. I’ll reread the stuff on NTFS in other threads.

Mary, what would happen to un-encrypted NTFS files secured by access right if someone were to steal a computer? Assuming only Admin and two users with Admin rights have been granted access rights to that partition, would someone be able to get at those files if they stole the computer? How difficult would it be to hack into the files? I think this would fully clear up the questions Dale and I have. Thanks!

          Dear dale.lacey,
The answer to your question depends of how sophisticated suspected thief is. No security settings are 100% secure, and if your computer will be stolen, with enough time and resources all kind of protection can be broken. Usually NTFS with no less then six-characters login passwords considered will be secure enough, but with some UNIX hacks it is possible to crack it. To make hacker

            Thanks

In my particular case, I’m not worried about hackers. The scenario I’m wanting to guard against is:

            • Thief steals PC
            • Thief sells to a receiver.
            • Receiver notices interesting stuff on computer, and decides to write to newspapers about how scandalous I am for not securing clients’ confidential information.[/list]Sounds like NTFS does the job for me.

One final question. Am I correct that, with NTFS, a nasty person can’t do either of the following:

              1. Avoid the security by booting from a floppy.
              2. Avoid the security by changing DIP switches.

              Thanks
              Dale

If you’re not a member of an Intelligence Organisation, the only way to access NTFS5 encrypted files is to crack the password. So use strong passwords (more than 8 characters, alphanumeric + punctuation, spaces, non-words)

We have decided upon PC Guardian $39.95 for our data. Had a look at load of progs. But this seem easiest to encrypt files AND folders with 1 password.
