Apparently with a recent update one (older) PC with Windows 10 Home 21H1 is required ctrl-alt-del to unlock. Another (almost as old) PC with Windows 10 Home 21H1 does not.

I’ve tried netplwiz and found Secure sign-in was not checked. I checked-apply-unchecked-apply and it didn’t help. I checked the “DisableCad” registry key at \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon and it is ‘1’.

I appreciate the security angle, but it’s a fuss and I’m mostly wondering what is going on.

    Thanks in advance.

Maybe this will help (I have Pro version, this won’t work on home, I believe).

      start – run – mmc gpedit.msc

Under computer configuration – local policies – security options

set  “Interactive logon: Do not require CTRL+ALT+DEL”

Seems the registry you gave should have worked – the machine hasn’t at some point been on a domain so there is an overriding policy maybe? might be worth checking the network settings if that’s the case, though unjoining a domain which can no longer be validated against can be problematic.

Yeah, gpedit isn’t available on the Home version. The computer was never part of a domain. Just another puzzle…

      A mystery indeed – I don’t think you even have secpol.msc either?

Though while looking to check that assumption I did find this:

Thanks for the hint, I’ll have to check into it. However, yesterday–after a week of having to find Ctrl-Alt-Del to unlock the PC–it returned to normal. A tap of Esc or any other key now does the deed as before.

        Thanks again for the replies.

This old issue has not recurred (though sometimes it takes longer than expected to respond). Thanks.
