I can’t recall exactly -when- it began, but it was after a recent Windows 10 update. I have an older HP Core I-7 computer, with a second old Radeon card so I can have a second display in Extended Mode.

The power scheme is set so tha the monitors shut off after 30 minutes. And when they do, the second monitor, on the Radeon card, begins causing a constant USB connect/disconnect beep every 2 seconds. If I power off the monitor it stops.

I’ve tried upgrading video drivers, removing USB drivers, changing the ‘sound’ setting of USB drivers and…. nothing helps.

    Any ideas?

Software wise undoing the patch for an irritation might be a bit much but it could be you need to roll back a driver:

To help beyond general suggestions the PC and monitor models, and the actual model of the added card might all help. I can’t be sure any of these are your exact issue.

The first question is does the monitor have a USB hub – if so it sounds as if the ports have too much load to operate without the assistance from the PC (try unplugging some devices from the monitor hub to see if the problem stops..) – another alternative there is to set USB selective suspend setting to disabled and see if the problem goes away (as the port should stay on, or go off – an old driver might misbehave with selective suspend but it would have to be really old!)

      https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/usb-settings-in-power-plan-options-on-windows-10/38753b89-65d0-49c1-8f91-2bb50f9b19a0

If there is no hub in the monitor then I can only suggest you check the monitor menu settings (that is to say, the menu you get by pressing buttons on the monitor, or just default the settings through the menu.)

Alternatively you could just turn off the sound and forget about it.. (windows +x, settings, personalisation, themes, sounds – turn off device connect and disconnect.. but I understand you tried that (attachment) in which case could it be a third party application associated with the monitor or something on the USB port which is making the noise? Maybe check the display driver settings for the added card and the main card for settings referencing sounds..

I guess an alternative to actually find the problem device would be to leave a script periodically running a suitable pnputil /enum-devices command piped to a log set to start just before the power save cuts in, and leave it run for a bit with the noise going on and compare the results to see what changes to work out which driver is stopping and starting (assuming of course that the unplugging hardware suggestion didn’t help).. but that’s a lot of effort.. maybe a rummage through the event viewer logs for the period the problem is occurring might more easily illuminate the cause – have you looked?
