    I apologise if this is in the wrong area

    Has anyone come across a problem when searching the contents of folders via explorer

    We have a folder that contains .dat files. We have noticed that if we use the search contents of a file option the .dat files are not displayed in the results. This is causing considerable difficulty as users think that files are missing when they are actually there.

    Is this a known fault or could we be doing something wrong when searching.

    Thanks for any advice

      By default, only files from a fixed list of known file types will be searched. To cause search to look through all files you need to set the following registry key:

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlContentIndex]
      "FilterFilesWithUnknownExtensions"=dword:00000001

      See Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 309173 for more information.
