Searching for a file or folder

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. How do I search through a top level folder, e.g., OS (C:), for a file or folder. Under XP on my old machine, I used to be able to run a Search in Powerdesk, but there is yet to be a 64 bit version of Powerdesk and I cannot figure out, at least it is not obvious, how to do a search in Windows Explorer. Any insight will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Replies

The search function on the start button is very intuative. Start typing you folder or file name and see what happens. Unfortunately, I know of no way to search the way you are asking. Perhaps someone else will have that answer.

I use Powerdesk 7.0 also. Have you tried right clicking on your PD icon and run as administrator?

In Windows Explorer if you click on C:, do you not see “Search Local Disk (C:)” in the upper right search box?

open an explorer window of the folder you want to search and in the top-right corner there is a “search” box that you can use for simple searches. for more advanced searches, press [F3]. that will open a “search results” window. towards the top-right corner of that window, click on the down arrow next to “advanced search” and you will get a search options window that resembles the old XP search.

i would like to think there’s a keyboard shortcut to accomplish all this with one keypress, but i’ve yet to find it.

To search for a file named “whatever” you should type Name:whatever in the Windows explorer search box.
