    Windows 10 Home – 21H2 (19o44.1956) x 2
    Windows 10 Home – 21H1 (19044.1415)

Windows SearchApp.exe is using 70 – 90% CPU on all three PCs. I thought is was my resource hog Norton 360. Each time you open Task Manager the CPU usage immediately stops because the Search is Suspended. With Task Manager closed the CPU usage jumps. Others have reported the same (maybe even worse) at a Microsoft Answer board at the following link.

I have deleted the Index and redid it – no change.

    One poster stated (today):

I had a similar issue with SearchApp.exe taking all my RAM – it definitely had a memory leak.
    Fixed it by uninstalling kb5010415.

According to my update history, KB5010415 wasn’t installed and is listed as an Optional Quality update.

I am open for suggestions to control this SearchApp or should I stop all indexing?

According to my records Build 19044.1415 is v20H2 December 2020 update KB5008212.
There is no 21H2 Build 19044.1956 – the latest consumer build is 19044.1566 which is a Preview CU issued 2/15 /22.

We have not been recommending Preview Builds.
Try installing the Feb Patch Tuesday Security Update (CU) KB5010342. It should give you 21H1/21H2 Builds 19043.1526 and 19044.1526.

Sorry, my error. It is 19044.1526 on those 2 Windows 10 that are 21H2. and the other is 20H2.  The Windows 10 Home – 20H2 (19044.1415) …The update was already there awaiting a reboot.  Done – Now it is 21H1(19043.1526)  Problem still there 91% CPU usage.

Is this high CPU usage by the SearchApp.exe connected to an update, since the PC with 20H2 (19044.1415) shows the same problem before and after the update or is this a different problem.

That link to Microsoft Answer community has people posting this problem since December 2021, with a lot of posts with this problem within the last few days.

Is anyone else seeing this high CPU usage?

Outlook Search not showing recent emails after Windows update KB5008212 (microsoft.com)

I am not seeing this here. The above is a related issue.  What if you leave the computer on overnight?

      Thanks for your reply.

Outlook is on only 1 of the 3 Windows 10 I have. The revert of that update must have worked because my search function in Outlook is OK except it showed I still have over 8,000 items in Outlook that needed to be indexed, but that ongoing indexing is using only 1-5 % CPU.

I usually leave my PCs on overnight. Last night I shut all them down by-passing the quick start function. This morning the SearchApp.exe is only using 1-5 % CPU. The quick start cache must have been damaged. I experienced quick off /on power outages recently that shutdown these PCs (I don’t have a ups system), so I suspect that was the cause. I don’t know for sure, but the SearchApp is no longer hogging my CPU.

      I marked this thread solved.

I’ve not experienced SearchApp.exe using 70-90% CPU rather 70-90% of the system memory. It brings the system to a crawl and applications begin to fail and crash due to its absolute HOG of memory usage.

Apparently removing KB5010415 resolves the issue. I have yet to remove it as I am still looking for a solution.

FWIW, dump Windows Search and use NirSoft’s SearchMyFiles.

No overhead only uses resources when running.
Faster than Windows Search w/more options.

I create a scheduled task to run it so I can search C: (run as Admin) and then create a shortcut on my taskbar to call the scheduled task.

Works great, I’ll never go back!
