For as long as I can remember whenever I have wanted to search for a file/ folder when I hit the Start tab then Search the first screen shot came to view. All of a sudden the second has started to appear and I have to click on the text next to the dog to get the former option. What may have precipitated this and can it be reversed please. Thanks Dave.

      What operating system? – XP?

Apparently you have installed Windows Search. Windows Search is a newer and more capable version of the native Windows XP search facility.
You should be able to uninstall it, if you really wish to do so, from the Add or Remove Programs control panel.

Many thanks Hans. I must have been on autopilot when I welcomed this into the computer as I can’t recall when I did it. Rather naive I know but there you are. [Would it perhaps have crept in with some Microsoft update?] If, as you indicate, this is quicker & more thorough than the former, I suppose it is as well to leave it on top so to speak. As I said, the former version is still available by simply clicking the the heading next to the old dog. Thanks Dave.

As far as I know, Windows Search is not installed by the automatic update mechanism. It is offered as an optional update if you visit the Microsoft Update website.
