    hello Loungers

I was asked to develop a search function for a web site I am helping to build. This search should be limited to the web site itself, such that it will look for items, published articles, or news clippings that are part of the web site itself, published by the staff, and maybe the archive section of the web site.

Is there a canned application that one can implement to search for key words in the web site that one is developing?

Like the search function we had here on this lounge, or the stuff you see on news web sites, or company web sites have them some times as compared to say Google.

    Thanks in advance.

Some website development tools include scripts and applications for index and search. Or you can find them out on the web (not necessarily free).

For a small site, you can try Atomz Search for free; as traffic increases, you will have to pay/subscribe. Atomz Search crawls your site on a schedule or on demand, and has various options for integration into your site’s look and feel. It’s fast and they do all the work. What’s not to like? grin

(Disclosure: I did a bit of legal work for this company a while ago.)

        thankyou Jefferson

I will check with the site owner and see if they want to go with ATOMZ, but I am sure it is a great thing to have.

The ‘Google search’ is itself downloadable from google.com. A simple hack could localize it to your site…

        thankyou Peter

I looked at your web site and I saw your Google searcher. OK do they allow you to hack their code, or is it something that you can do on your own, and call it MyGoogle?

As I cant speak for Google, I recommend you check their site. They offer the free lines of HTML, which is what i am using. They also offer specialty searches.

Even if they charge something, it is usually cheaper to pay than to write your own, or to continue to search for something else.
