I am trying to help a friend delete her DELETED ITEMS.DBX folder as it appears that it is corrupted. When I tell her to go to the SEARCH command, she does not get the options of where to look (LOOK IN), or “when was it modified” or “what size is it” or “more advanced options”. When she does the search, it comes up with NO RESULTS and I am sure it is because she has not been able to tell it to search in hidden files or system files. How do we get the various options to show up in her SEARCH COMPANION?

Select Start | Search
Click ‘Change Preferences’.
Click ‘Change Files And Folders Search Behavior’.
Select ‘Advanced’.
Click OK.

Went over to my friend’s home today and found that the SEARCH window was opening somewhat small and she had to scroll down to see all of the options. She simply was not aware of the scroll bar and that the options were down lower in the page. Sorry for the confusion.

Apart from telling her how to (as a temporary measure) use the Command Prompt and do a search (start at the root; /S search sub-folders; use some combo of /AS /AH etc. if needed (hidden files, system files etc.) since I don’t know what you are looking after; you could always navigate to the dbx in the user profile without searching), there seem to be some problem or change in use of the Search Companion.

If she doesn’t have Change Preferences, is this what she sees? I.e., Classic Search. (NB: this UI is in Swedish.)

Edited to add: sorry, even this version has some advanced settings; the fourth check box. You’ll have to tell a little more what she sees.

Instead of using Windows Search, download and use this free, very fast search prog.

LOCATE32

Run it’s “update” file first in order to create a search database, then run locate. You can use a wildcard *.DBX to find all.
