Well, I couldn’t think of a better title. And, I am sure I read about this earlier but I could not think of a search term that would find it.

I have a spreadsheet with a column containing a default set of characters. To some of them, using the F2 function, I add additional information. I now want to remove the contents ONLY from the cells containing JUST the default characters. For instance:

Cell Contents
A1 abc
A2 abcdef

A3 abcghi
A4 abd

I would like to search and replace ONLY cells A1 and A4.

John,

Unless A4 is a mis-type in your example you could have a problem. However, if you do an Exact match search for ab? it will find both abc & abd. If A4 is a mis-type just do an exact match search for abc.

Note: Example using Excel 2003

Double Palm Slap.

Yes, A4 was a typo.

And “Match entire cell contents” is something that I have seen time and time again. Brain freeze and Senior Moment combined.

Thanks for the information.

Or you could filter on the default characters and clear the contents of those cells
