SeaMonkey 2.0 has been released. This is a free all-in-one internet application suite combining a web browser, e-mail, newsgroup and feed client, IRC chat and HTML editing.

The web-browser component is based on the Mozilla source code used in Firefox 3.5, and the e-mail component based on code that will be used in the forthcoming Thunderbird 3. For more details see the SeaMonkey 2.0 release notes.

I use SeaMonkey’s HTML editing capability a bit, though i usually wind up doing tweaks by hand using EditPad Lite.

It seems to write clean minimal code that runs with no problems on Opera, Firefox and IE8 (well, minor issues with page positioning on IE, easily fixed by a quick hand-edit).

For some reason, the e-mail in 2.0 is incredibly slow compared with 1.1.18 and I can’t figure out why. I wonder if 2.0 is attempting to index all of the e-mail. I keep all of my old e-mail on an external hard drive which is currently connected via USB. Since 2.0 installs as a separate application from 1.x, I can still bring up 1.1.18 and process e-mail with the same throughput as before. If anyone else experiences this problem, please let me know.
