Hi Skitter,

Don’t tell National Parks New Zealand … but we waited til it was dark and threw stones at it. It moved away for long enough for us to move the tent.

In the morning, it was only about 5 metres away from where our tent had been, so it had not moved far.

The tent still smells …

Is this the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval? He figured it was his tent, and his property, and he has The Great Seal to back him up. You don’t speak Seal and he doesn’t speak English.

You could make up a hundred stories, fables, and legends to go with this, and I think you should use your imagination and get to work on it. “Look what I woke up to find sleeping beside me!” What if he was a she and she was there to start a family? This is the best True Adventures Photograph I have seen in ages, and you can treasure it for years to come . Just don’t tell the part about throwing stones at it. I suspect that five metres is quite a hike for a legless creature.

I must admit that the grass looks well kept and the thing is probably spoiled rotten by people who feed animals when they shouldn’t, but the photo is a delight, and at least merits a decent title.

Hi Peter,

We watched the seal from the headland for a while that afternoon – it had been sleeping on some rocks.

We then saw it climb the steps and negotiate the ramp to get up from the beach to the camping area. It headed straight for our tent. There were many campers around and it could have chosen any site it wanted.

I must admit that our tent does feel good. The fabric, I mean. It is lightweight (yes, that’s my bicycle in the background).

I don’t know that anyone else fed it or spoiled it in any other way.

While we were sitting and waiting to see what it would do, the English folk ‘next door’ came over with ‘a nice hot cup of tea’. It was gratefully accepted. Later, the German girls came over with beers. That was even better. It was a good way to meet the neighbours.

Lots of other campers took photos as well, and laughed, and said they were lucky it was not them.

Tell ya anyway -probably a fur seal. A think the only sea lions on the “mainland” are in a small colony near Dunedin.

You get the juveniles showing up in all sorts of places when they get kicked out of home.

It was Curio Bay. We had seen the seals near Dunedin a few days before.

Wild Seals can be a nuisance sometimes.

When I lived next to Smiths Cove in Waterford CT. we had seals that would migrate too far south and wind up on my property.

One day I darn near ran over one that had parked its self under my truck for an over night stay.

If it weren’t for the sound of my engine starting I would have probably killed it with my dual rear tires.

But it scampered out to the water at a speed that surprised me.

After that day I made it a point to look under the truck every morning.

The odd thing was no one from the marine aquarium in Mystic could figure why they migrated so far south and came into the cove.

The cove (which is mostly fresh water) has to be at least two hundred miles away from any ocean pathway that any mammal like a seal would use.

(By the way the best way we found to chase them away was banging two cheap metal pots together).

That is a great picture! This is one of those stories that will live on forever. Certainly one to pass down through the generations.

In my opinion, for what it is worth, I think the seal was more partial to the air mattress that you can see sticking out from under the tent. Why, it must have been like lying in the water. I am sure it felt great after having been lying on the rocks earlier!
