SD Cards?

Maybe I’m really missing something here, but why would I bother with SD cards when there are USB drives? There must be advantages…Most every machine I see today has at least one USB drive, but not always and SD card drive, so…?

No advantages imo
I don’t see an advantage to them over your standard USB thumb drives unless one already has a camara or other device
where the drive can easily be swapped to the reader of a computer.
Comes down to personal choice to a large extent I guess.

Yes, cameras and phones (microsSD with adapters for SD) both use SD cards.

It appears that devices where size is an issue generally use the smaller form factor of the SD or MicroSD card. I suspect if you were to open the Flash drive and the SD card you would see similar electronics. The interface to your PC is really one of the biggest difference, that and the form factor.

I use MicroSD cards in my GPS.

Perhaps someone can help me with a problem that has just come up. I have a Multi Card Reader that plugs into a USB port and yesterday when i went to change some files on the MicroSD card, I get a message that it can’t proceed:- “The Disk is Write Protected, Remove the Write Protection or use another disk.”

Neither the Reader nor the MicroSD card has any lock switch. I have tried three different SD cards and tried using the Card reader in another machine with the same result.

Is it common for Card Readers to Fail in this way?

How old is the reader? I have not used a reader of this type since my laptops both have a built in device for this purpose. Have you tried a different USB port on your PC? If you get the same failure in more than one USB port it could very well be the reader has failed. Since I am unfamiliar with their operation I do not know if they can be write protected by S/W.

Can you right click the reader icon in My Computer (does it even show up) and see if there is a write protect option?

The reader is about 12 months old, a “Lucky Dragon” brand I suppose. It does not show up in My Computer, Just the SD card (as a disk) that is plugged into it.
As I said, I have tried 3 different SD cards in the reader and tried the reader plugged into in my laptop as well as my desktop. I believe it has to be the reader.

You are probably out of luck then. I do not know, are these readers expensive? Like I said, no experience with them. I suppose you could check with a local retailer to see if they could check it out for you before buying a new one.

I think I paid about $10 … not too much pain to buy another. Cheers!

Edit:- Just ordered a new one on eBay … $6.93 including delivery!

Yep, new reader solved my “Write” problems. I guess nothing lasts forever! Just happy it was a $6.93 solution!

May also need to check that the SD card does not have a little lock switch on it, these can easily be knocked into the locked position when removing and replacing. maybe you new reader overides this security option.

Thanks Clive, but these were microSD cards which don’t have a lock switch. The new reader recognises both microSD cards that the old reader still rejects.
