On one of my computers, in one boot partition (the Windows 2000 Pro/Office XP partition), when I use IE, I frequently get an error message “Microsoft Script De###### failed to initialize. Please reinstall the de###### components and try again.” It has only an OK button. After clicking OK, after a delay of 30 seconds or so, I get another error message, “A Runtime Error has occurred. Do you wish to Debug? Line 37, Error: Object expected” There are Yes and No buttons on this dialog. After clicking No, sometimes I get the original error message again, sometimes I can work normally on the Web page (at least for a brief while).

I tried downloading and installing the latest version of the Script De######, but it didn’t help.

    Any ideas?

Go to start | run and type sfc /scannow (system file checker)
      And you downloaded from here?

I tried the scannow line, and got a message that some protected Windows files were needed. It asked for my Windows 2000 CD, which was a problem, because this Dell computer came with Windows 2000 pre-installed, and doesn’t have a regular Windows CD. However, I fed it a Windows 2000 CD that I got for another computer, and apparently it was accepted, because when I rescanned, the scan completed without any messages.

I did download the Script De###### from the VBS Web page.

I tried a few Web sites, and so far no error message — hopefully the problem has been fixed.

Unless you particularly want to debug erorrs, it may be worth simply disabling it in your Options.

The scanning and repair of Windows protected files seems to have fixed the problem (so far), but if it comes back I will try disabling script debugging in IE.
