• Scan disk won’t complete

When I do a scan disk in win98 – it won’t finish. It starts and tries 10 times and then tells me that another program is writing to the disk. I don’t have anything else open except for what is running under msconfig.

I can sometimes complete a scan when I do a defrag. But not always. I use Norton Systemworks to do my defrags.

Can anyone direct me to where I can find a solution to this problem? It’s really quite annoying. I like to do a scan disk every week, and you can imagine how frustrating it is that I no longer can do such a simple task as this!

    Thanks, most wonderful people!

Check this earlier post here – otherwise I used to run it from DOS – always seemed a lot faster.

        Hi Lief:

I never learned DOS. What do you do to run it in DOS & how do you select your options?

        Thanks in advance,

          Shutdown/Restart in MS-DOS

          Enter Scandisk /? [RETURN]

This will give you a rundown on all the switches.
Otherwise, just running Scandisk will default to the current drive, run the usual file checks, then pause and ask if you want to run a surface scan.

I remember in my days of W95 I set up a batch file using the .ini file to do all drives – there should be a sample .ini somewhere on your system.

I think you can also start windows in safe mode, then do a scan or defrag, never tried it though. I will try it when I do my next defrag.

you can do a scan and a defrag in safe mode – it works fine – I used to do this before trying ‘ENDITALL’ which I read about here!
Scandisk works fine in DOS, though defrag won’t. Just restart in dos mode and type ‘scandisk’ – when the program finishes type ‘Win’ and Windows will reload
              Hope this helps

I had problems with both scandisk and Norton Utilities, untill I realized the real frustration is in the programs running in the background writing to the disk and triggering the restart. Get the program EndItAll (free – do a search, I forget the site) and let it clean out the running stuff, then start your defragger of whatever kind – should keep happily running till finished.
