On one of my computers, when I save a jpg type picture, it saves it as a jpg. On another computer, it wants to save the same file as a jpeg. I can delete the e before saving but I would rather it just saved as a jpg in the first place. Vuepro is the program I have associated with those file types on both machines. Any ideas? Thanks.

I found it. I will post my findings just in case anyone else has this problem. I don’t know how it got changed but by searching the registries on 2 computers and comparing them I came up with this and it worked. In the registry (regedit) under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, MIME, DATABASE, CONTENT TYPE, IMAGE/JPEG. On the right side see the name EXTENSION and in the data column just take out the E making it “.JPG” rather than “.JPEG”.

Hi Jack, Vuepro is a good program, I have had it for a while and shows .jpg correctly. Seems you have managed to solve the problem, I wonder how it inserted the additional “e” in the first place.

It just did it again. I had to reformat and re-install 98SE. I loaded all my software and updated to IE6 and SP1. I also upgraded windows itself. And a few programs that are fairly new. One of those changed the registry from jpg to jpeg. If I do manage to find the culprit I will post it. Darn thing.

What other graphic software are you installing? Each and every one will most likely make this change for you.

I have installed a video capture card and related software and I suspect it is one of those programs that caused the problem. That is about the time it happened the first time. My fix of editing the registry has worked and it sticks so it must just be on an install that the setting is changed. I’ll watch for it the next time I have to re-format and reinstall everything.

I found the software making the change though it seems strange. It is Adaptec/Roxio EZ CD Creator. Both version 5 and 6 seems to be the programs making this change. I have no idea why. I just thought I would pass this along in case anyone else has the problem and does a search of the forum.
