Saving e-mail (Outlook 2000)

When I save e-mail to a .pst on the network, the size of the files seem to increase. Is this a known issue with Outlook or is there something else going on?

it ‘s how outlook works – message sizes are smallest in exchange mailboxes, larger in a pst and very large stored individually on the HD. This is because of the extra data (TNEF information mostly) that outlook stores with the messages.

TNEF = Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format. It’s used by exchange clients to identify RTF formatting. Some non-exchange mail servers will strip the TNEF data from the messages during transport.

One more thing – messages stored on the hard drive (as *.msg) contain both plain text and RTF/TNEF information in them – basically every bit of information outlook needs to open it. This is why the file size grows.

PSTs store less of this data in the message itself and exchange mailboxes even less.
