By default, File | SaveAs now seems to offer me ‘ Document template (*.dot) ‘ instead of ‘ Word document (*.doc) ‘
What have I done, or – more to the point – how can I get back to a dot-doc-default ?
TIA

This post is one of several that contains instructions on how to delete the Word registry key.
I have used this trick many times in slapping Word97SR2 back to its proper behaviours wrt dot/doc and other file-related problems.
Also missing/faulty Headers toolbars and sundry other problems.
After deleting the data key, I have to reset a few really useful options (Tools, Options, Save and General, from memory), but that’s it.
A year ago I smartened up and (a) deleted the data key (2) reset it the way I liked it and © exported that key/value to a *.reg on the desktop.
Now when Word97SR2 gets out of line, I double-click the file and carry on as if I didn’t care; which I don’t.
Hope this helps.
> what the Data key holds, see this article:
Right. been there, done that. Unfortunately, these types of articles really say “These are the areas that can have problems”. There is no definition of what/how the individual data values are stored – it’s just an in-house binary string.
Another reason why I detest the registry – it does not allow a programmer to access what is stored there. We have no way, for example, of interrogating the data to determine what files are stored in the MRU, or what toolbars etc.
> really say “These are the are
I know. What I meant to say is “.. are worded as if they were saying ….”. The tone of the article is backed up, as you point out, that the authour has had to “glean” info.
My guess is that there once was a cubicle with a serial control sheet, and if you had some scurvy data that you needed to store, you assigned yourself the next available locations from the sheet. That way noone’s data trod on anyone’s toes.
Unless someone couldn’t read your handwriting, in which case some of the Toolbars data stepped all over the MRU data and MSoft started telling the phone-in callers “Just delete the DATA item and everything will be OK”.
