Somehow the File menu was changed so that underneath “Save” is “Save as Web Page” where “Save as…” used to be. I don’t know how this happened. The only way save as a Word document is to proceed with “Save as Web Page” then change to “.doc” in drop-down within the dialogue box that follows “Save as Web Page.” How do I get the old (default) setting back, short of starting with a new normal.dot — which I don’t want to do because I have a customized setup for Word.

Haven’t heard of this one before. The first thing would be to restart Windows just in case Word has been temporarily mangled. A second thing to try, if your menus have not been customized, is to reset them: Tools>Customize…, Toolbars tab, select Menu bar, click Reset. Does that help?

Or, less drastic than Jefferson’s suggestion:
      – Select Tools | Customize…
      – Activate the Commands tab.
      – Select the File category.
      – Locate Save as… in the list of commands, and drag it to the File menu.
      – The File menu will drop down.
      – Drop the Save as… item under the Save item.
      – Close the Customize dialog.
