    I can’t boot WindowsMe into safe mode. The WinMe help screens say to boot holding down the F8 key or the Ctrl key. When I do either, the boot process stops with a “keyboard error” message. I need safe mode to run scandisk and defrag without constant interupts.

      It sounds like you are holding down the key too soon and this is creating an error in the Power On Self Test (POST) routines. Don’t press the key until the POST routines are almost complete.
