Runtime error ‘5981’: Could not open macro storage (2003 SP3)

Good morning,

I have a user who, when launching a word doc from an accounting program, receives ‘Runtime error ‘5981’: Could not open macro storage’. I’ve tried replacing normal.dot and uninstalling/reinstalling Office, to no avail. Other users in the office don’t have any issue opening the document (through the same accounting program). Any ideas?

It could be caused by the Office plug-in for Norton AntiVirus – if the user has NAV, it’s a good idea to disable this plugin (it won’t compromise security as long as AutoProtect is active).

Or it could be an add-in – try Phil Rabichow’s Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word.

To amplify the problem; it only occurs when opening documents that are linked to excel workbooks.
