Using MSinfo32 utility, I found the following tasks running on my WIN 98SE system:

MSGSRV32.EXE (Windows 32-bit VxD Message Server)

MPREXE.exe (Win 32 Network Interface Service Process)

MMTASK.tsk (Multimedia background task support module)

    WMIEXE.exe (WMI Service Exe Housing)

    Ddhelp.exe (Microsoft DirectX Helper)

    Pstores.exe (Protected Storage Server)

Can anyone help me to understand what these actually are and do? Do they have to be “running”? Can they be disabled?

    Thanks.

..except that mmtask.tsk is the task scheduler and is not at all necessary. The way I prevent its icon appearing in the systray is to rename a file in the Windows directory called mmtask.exe. This stops the icon appearing and (apart from the scheduler not being usable) had no deleterious effects at all.
If you’re really curious, try end-tasking them in Task Manager. If they’re needed, your os will soon let you know (probably with a bsod), but on re-boot things will run again.
