AskWoody MVPJune 8, 2017 at 2:50 pm #119764If you are out and about a lot for your job, you may not get much opportunity to use a “real” computer (your desktop computer).
In those cases, I’d want a laptop, or at least a tablet with a keyboard and some sort of mouse. For me, a tablet (without a keyboard) or a smart phone is what you use for these situations if you have no other option.

AskWoody LoungerJune 8, 2017 at 3:48 pm #119773Noel stated the truth, “Desktops are where the work gets done.”, so aside from viewing documents has anybody seen a real human use Office with a tablet/phone? Do users have the feeling of frustration with claustrophobia when trying to use Office with such a small space?
Tablets, especially the iPad Pro, are becoming the preferred mobile device over laptops and I know many people who use them exclusively. This includes using MS Office. Especially people in sales jobs who travel a lot.

AskWoody LoungerJune 8, 2017 at 4:01 pm #119775In response to too many to reply to just one, and now on multiple threads:
I also have the view that productive output is best done sitting in an appropriate chair at an appropriate desk. But I did not intend for that to exclude other methods or directional exchanges of information, primarily inbound.
Some have discussed, sorry for not giving proper attribution, how they have integrated tablets and smaller devices in the retrieval and review portion of their productive process. I think that is an excellent use of away from terminal time and resources. Even at the desk, these items become additional screens to hold reference material when producing original output. For myself I cannot use an undersized, physically or internally, device for very long without becoming less productive myself. And I would appreciate an OS that recognizes that.
I don’t think any of us are helped by OS supplied advertising that distracts from flow. If you have gained the blindspot required to ignore those, then what else might you not notice?
EDIT: Reread edit to acknowledge, sorry this page does not let me see comments above during edit, I think it is GregH mentioned Outside Sales, an excellent example of ticking boxes and short comments made while standing in front of your customer, showing how you take them seriously. Obviously best done on a tablet. But the spreadsheet/database used in that scenario was likely made originally while sitting at a desk.

AskWoody LoungerJune 9, 2017 at 11:12 am #119913Just been percivering with IOS 9.5.3 here yeah Office is free, I take it its Off-365, It works for sure but in a very limited fashion. Serious Doc editing save adding comments or forwarding onwards is really not of the level that a real workstation or laptop has. I was considering ditching the laptop on trips, which can be a real pain working in “Cattle Class” (now with the travelling with laptops and also alas ipads also being taboo in Airline cabins may be I’ll get a quiet flight lol) but alas IOS hasnt proved its a serious contender in that respect more like an internet browser, or electronic notepad, email and, not to denegrate it too much, basically a Toy.
It reads xcell, word, docx and various other formats fine with out downloading Office but lacks the basic ability to work with them in any meanigful way.
Yeah I may relent and take it with me on business trips, its after all lite, fairly sturdy (will it survive the Rugby playing Baggage handlers treatment?) and unobtrusive and at times rather than pull the “Lappy” out it can do stuff yes even browse “askwoody” and post.
As a serious contender or must have Business tool its sadly lacking and it was a gift that the rest of the family didnt want and so it got cascaded down to the “old man” in the office upstairs who seems to be a hoarder or final destination of “Retro Tech” or a place to send the gadgets when they gather dust in various locales around the House lol
